Ulrich asks, “How can we move from dialogue to community. In dialogue there may be a very deep exchange, but there is no community. A dialogue may only happen once, but I’m interested in how we can create social systems from these dialogues.” Going beyond a one-night stand to a relationship.
Sabine feels she knows how bad leadership works but is curious about how good leadership functions and wants to find more adaptable, respectful and powerful ways for leadership. I don’t know what will come out of all this, she says, but I know there is a need for change.
Jim Collins in Good to Great talks about gathering the people first, and then looking at the desired outcome. First, "Who do we want to play with?", then "What do we want to do together?" and "What will attract these people?"
There are a lot of organizations struggling with these same issues, having to take risks now and ask the difficult questions about power and influence and leadership. Such a rich idea might give us the attractor we need to draw the people we want to collaborate with.
Ulrich likes the idea of a focus on leadership and listening, and wonders what is beyond diversity, and do we have (or can we create) a language to think about what is common between us?
Some questions occurred to Chris:
• What are the possibilities within a learning community?
• What does this tell us?
• What are the characteristics that we just described?
Here are her visual notes:
More questions:
• Why should we be learning together? What would be the reason behind our commitment?
• How do we “stay” at the table when we are in conflict?
Sabine says, I love to learn and it seems that we’re at a point in this world where we need to CONNECT our wisdom, to learn from each other. I feel that trans-cultural quality inside me personally given my life in two cultures.
Chris shares that Cisco has a phrase “Systems and Structures Build Trust”. Trust brings commitment, and commitment leads to innovation". When trust fails we need to go back and re-build the structure.
